About Lightbridge

Advancing Nuclear No-Carbon Power Towards a Bright Future

Lightbridge Corporation is a publicly-traded company headquartered in Reston, Virginia. We're advancing state-of-the-art fuel technology with the potential to transform the safety, economics and efficiency of nuclear power plants — and we advise emerging nuclear markets on implementing nuclear generation plans.

Get to Know Lightbridge

What Is the Secret?

Nuclear Fuel, Reimagined

Nuclear power already provides ten percent of the world's electricity and is set to grow significantly in the coming decades — delivering global energy security and combating climate change with virtually zero carbon emissions. Renewables like wind and solar are important, but they can't provide the 24/7 reliability that consumers and businesses demand. Current fuel rods have barely changed in design for decades; Lightbridge reimagined the nuclear fuel rod using advanced technology to make it safer and more economical, without compromising on quality.

Lightbridge Fuel™ Performance

Key Highlights

Key Highlights of Lightbridge Fuel™

Large Market

Lightbridge Fuel™ is designed to work in both new and existing reactors.

Waste Reduction

Less spent fuel per plant output, and the spent fuel is useless for weapons purposes.

Improved Safety

Internal temperature runs 1,000°C cooler than current fuel, avoiding hydrogen generation in design-basis accidents.

Improved Economics

Increases power output, extends the fuel cycle, and offers the lowest cost to add reliable electricity to the grid.

SMR Ready

Also in development for small modular reactors, adding load-following with renewables on a zero-carbon grid.

Utility-Backed

Four large electric utilities generating about half of US nuclear power advise Lightbridge on fuel development.

Unique Features

More Power, at a Lower Temperature

With Lightbridge Fuel™, a reactor can produce more power at a lower temperature, thanks to two unique features: an increased coolant flow rate — achieved by removing flow-restricting spacer grids so more water moves through the core without extra pump power — and increased fuel surface area, which raises safety margins and lets the fuel generate more heat.

Proliferation Resistance

Built With Non-Proliferation in Mind

Lightbridge Fuel™ uses an initial enrichment of just 15–20%, giving it the lowest strategic value for proliferation of any comparable fuel. It also contains significantly less plutonium than conventional uranium oxide fuel and consumes more uranium during its operating cycle — and any plutonium present in the spent fuel is considered "useless" for nuclear weapons, according to a 2018 peer-reviewed study published in Nuclear Engineering and Design.

Backing the Nuclear Renaissance

Aligned With the DOE's UPRISE Initiative

Lightbridge commended the U.S. Department of Energy's launch of UPRISE — the Utility Power Reactor Incremental Scaling Effort — aimed at expanding U.S. nuclear capacity by maximizing existing reactor output, restarting dormant facilities, and extending reactor lifespans. UPRISE targets 2.5 GW of additional nuclear capacity by 2027 and 5 GW by 2029, and Lightbridge Fuel™ is being designed to deliver meaningful power uprates with enhanced safety margins to support exactly that kind of national effort.

Strategic Partnerships

Building the Ecosystem Around Lightbridge Fuel™
